A look back on the first year of The Order of the Golden Yacht and The 8102 project.

It has been a while since my last newsletter - to be honest, after the introduction of our Discord server sending out emails felt wrong, and somewhat going against the web3 ethos of leaving old things behind us.
Over the last months I have thought a lot about it: Twitter and Discord just aren’t the solution, at least not for a small project like ours. People miss snapshots, mints, giveaways, and registration deadlines.
Talking to community members, friends, and other founders in this space confirmed this… So from this day forward each important announcement will also be made via newsletter - if you are not that active on Discord or Twitter, and haven’t subscribed yet, just hit the button below.
That being said, let’s get on with the main topic of today: a look at the past year of The Order of the Golden Yacht and The 8102 project.
July 25, 2021: The Order of the Golden Yacht
One year ago today, bored8102.com launched. It introduced not only Bored Ape #8102 as Gerry, but also a secretive society called The Order of the Golden Yacht. Within a few days the 500 free-to-claim membership badges minted out.
Immediately after minting a badge, holders were able to access a hidden section on the website with a teaser of our first project: The 8102.
The teaser offered a glimpse into a dystopian future in which a Super AI started an all-out war that brought humankind to the brink of extinction. But Gerry discovered a loophole in the programming of the AI’s forces and a chance to fight back.
September 17, 2021: The 8102: Yachts
With The 8102: Yachts the first token of The 8102 project came to life.
“Why yachts?”, you might ask.
Here’s the answer: while Gerry was busy analyzing the enemy, more and more friends gathered at the HQ of The Order of the Golden Yacht - a secret island lying deep within the Devil's Triangle. And they happened to bring their off-the-grid toys with them.
With 3,000 yachts at its disposal, The Order started recruiting captains. And once our campaign begins, captains will use their yachts to bring resources and troops where they are needed most.

January 2022: the8102.com & The 8102: Comic #0

January was a big month for The 8102: We launched a dedicated website for the project (the8102.com) that allows visitors to dive deeper into the story of The 8102.
It features a comic-esque intro section in which Gerry talks about the initial strike of the Super AI and about banding together with friends that made it to the secret island of The Order. After that visitors are guided through three sections - each introducing a key element for winning the war: Logistics (The 8102: Yachts), Information (The 8102: Comic #0), and Military Power (The 8102: T-LAWs).
The 8102: Comic #0
Back in October 2021 we announced the airdrop of a comic to The 8102: Yacht holders. In November 2021 we postponed snapshot and airdrop due to insane gas levels of constant >100 gwei for months.
But we still released the comic itself - a 6-page short comic created by our artist Toby! It depicts the first strike of the Super AI’s forces and at the same time reveals what our combatants will be: T-LAWs - Lethal Autonomous Weapons of the Tarantula class.
In January gas finally calmed down enough to do the holder snapshot and airdrop The 8102: Comic #0 tokens.
Comic #0 also marks the beginning of a comic series that will tell many stories of the evolving The 8102 world and its characters over the coming years. The 8102: Comic #0 holders will receive tokens of successive comics for free.
In addition, a mechanism will be introduced that will enable holders to burn The 8102: Comic #0 in order to receive one of four different The 8102: Founders Tokens. We will share details about this mechanism very soon! 👀

February 26 - March 4, 2022: Regatta #1
In February we shared what we’ve been working on: The 8102: Regatta, an idle mini-game for The 8102: Yacht holders.
In this multi-day event yachts competed in 14 races around the world for ETH and NFT prizes. 115 yachts signed up and after more than 106 hours of racing, we saw a tight finish with the winner leading by just 7 seconds!
April 26-29, 2022: Regatta #2
Inspired by the thrilling finish of Regatta #1 we added another game mode for Regatta #2: In elimination mode yachts go head to head with only the winner moving on to the next round.
309 yachts were registered and competed in 3 qualification races. The top 256 ranked yachts moved on to the finals which saw some amazing races over 8 rounds!
May 2022: Incorporation
End of May we set up a company for the project which gives us a fantastic foundation for everything to come!
What is next?
Even though we’re already one year into our journey, it still feels like we just started out. There is so much we want to build, so many stories we want to tell and we’re thrilled to keep working on bringing our visions to life.
For the immediate future you can expect:
Regatta #3 - OGY badge holders were asked in our Discord to vote for the racing mode and it’s going to be another elimination mode!
Details on the Comic #0 burn mechanism - keep the Comic #0 to receive future comic releases or burn it for one of four founder tokens?
Access to the secret island of The Order: this will be the starting region of our browser game and The 8102: Yacht holders will be able to access The Order’s dockyard in order to upgrade their yachts.
